Cogeneration

Environmentally-friendly power plants in the UK

The process of cogeneration from Basalt Global

Generating heat and electricity in one process and doing so on-site where the power is needed offers high fuel efficiency, this has enabled Basalt Global, a provider of heat and power to the agricultural sector in the UK to supply energy at lower prices than traditional suppliers.

Combined heat and power makes more efficient use of primary fuel for producing heat and power than separate conventional boilers and power stations. The UK average fossil fuel electricity generator has an efficiency of around 35%. The remaining 65% of the energy is lost, mostly as heat via cooling towers and to a smaller degree in
electricity transmission. A combined heat and power plant uses around 40% of its fuel to create electricity but instead of the heat being released into the environment, the majority is used to heat buildings and facilities via a local heating system, making combined heat and power at least 80% and potentially 100% efficient.
